Have you ever wondered what it feels like to look into the eyes of a mountain gorilla?
This is the central question for many world travellers. Uganda offers a definitive answer through its “Chimps and Gorillas Tracking Expedition”. This 7-day journey is not just a holiday; it is a pilgrimage to the heart of the wild. You will visit two of the most iconic national parks in Africa. These are Kibale Forest National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.
The Journey Begins in the Crater Lakes
Your adventure starts at Entebbe International Airport. You will be met by a representative and assisted with a flight to Kasese Airstrip. From there, you enter the Bunyaruguru Crater Lake region. Your home for the first three nights is the exquisite Ndali Lodge.
Ndali Lodge is an eco-lodge set near a large volcanic crater. It consists of individual cottages with private verandas. The views are spectacular. At night, the lodge is lit by lanterns and candles. There is no external power needed for the water system. Water comes directly from the Crater Lake 100 metres below. You will sleep in four-poster beds draped in mosquito nets. It is a place of utter romance and seclusion.
Tracking the Chimpanzee Kingdom
On day two, you enter the Kibale Forest National Park. This forest is world-famous. It holds the largest concentration of chimpanzees in East Africa. Tracking these primates can be strenuous. It often lasts up to four hours. You will observe their social bonds, grooming, and play.
After the trek, the adventure continues. You can walk through the Bigodi Swamp or visit local craters. You can also explore the 1,000-acre farm at Ndali. Local guides will show you banana and vanilla plantations. You might even visit the dramatic Mahoma Waterfall.
Into the Misty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
On day four, you move south to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. You will stay at the Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp. This camp is tucked deep within the national park. It provides a luxurious base for your tracking experience.
The forest is a haven for biodiversity. It houses over 350 bird species. Twenty-four of these are endemic to the Albertine Rift. There are also rare forest elephants and giant forest hogs. You may see over 200 species of butterflies.
The One-Hour Gorilla Encounter
Day five is the cornerstone of the expedition. You will meet your lead tracker for a safety briefing. Then, you hike into the dense foliage. Once the gorillas are located, time seems to stand still. Your group is allowed a maximum of one hour with them. You will watch the silverback leader and his family. It is an encounter that defies words.
In the evening, you return to camp for a gourmet dinner. You can relax and listen to folk tunes. These are played on the traditional Bakiga guitar.
Meeting the Forest Masters
On day six, you meet the local Batwa community. This is a rare privilege. Only eight of the original Batwa are believed to remain. They are the ancient masters of the forest. They will show you how they hunt and make fire. You will learn how they use plants for medicine. They also share how they build houses and bury their dead.
